  • When is an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) appropriate?
    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging, also called MRI, is a non-invasive method of viewing the inside of the human body without radiation as in X-ray and CT scanning. Using a magnetic field and radio waves, MRI allows doctors to look through a patient’s bones and take clear pictures of organs and tissues. This information helps doctors obtain important clinical information. It reduces the need for exploratory surgery and other diagnostic procedures that have associated risk.
    • Open and Conventional MRI systems can be used on every part of the body and are highly effective tools for diagnosing and evaluating these conditions.

  • What happens during your visit
    • The MRI technologist will take a complete medical history and screening information to insure your safety
    • The MRI technologist will position you on the table and then move the table so that the area to be imaged is in the center of the machine’s magnetic field. Some patients receive an injection of a contrast agent to highlight a particular body structure.
    • The procedure itself is painless; you will not see or feel anything. Throughout the procedure, you will hear and speak easily with the MRI technologist who sees you clearly through the glass-walled examination room.
    • During the procedure, you will hear a series of knocking sounds that indicate that the machine is taking pictures. These sounds may last a few minutes, pause, and then resume. It is important to remain still at this time. Earplugs and headsets for music are provided.
